Most people in search of a job will go through many interviews before they land a job offer. The failed interviews are not necessarily frittered time. If you are practical you can learn a lot when you do not get the offer, and apply that learning to your next interview to improve your chances for success.
Own the Feelings of Rejection
It is important that you recognize that any rejection, especially one that is as important as employment, is going to be a blow to your ego. Allow yourself to feel a little down without letting the rejection crush you, but do not dwell on it or take it personally. Recognize that there will have been many candidates, all matching the position to some extent. Not being chosen does not necessarily mean that you were a bad fit for the position.
Allow Yourself to be Sherlock Holmes
No matter how the interview went, it is always a good idea to email the hiring manager and thank this person for the opportunity the interview provided. If it is not terribly forward, you can also ask if you can have a conversation about your interview performance. Some hiring managers will be open to the discussion, as long as you are careful not to waste their time. When you talk with the hiring manager, be frank with your questions about why you were not selected and what aspects of your performance require improvement. Take solid notes during the conversation, and reiterate your interest in future openings with the company.
Take Mental Stock of Your Performance
Take the time to go over the interview in your own mind, and note any points at which you feel things took a left turn. Analyze what went wrong and what you could have done differently, or how you may have answered a question with more success. If there was a question you did not expect, write it down and formulate good answer that you could use in future interviews. If your performance was caffeine fueled, practice the interview process with a friend until you feel more at ease. If wardrobe or a traffic delay caused problems, build a plan for next time to ensure that these problems are corrected.
Snoop on Sites Like LinkedIn and Company Websites
After making an assessment of your own interview performance, take the time to find out who did get the position. You will be able to find this information using the company website or through a site like LinkedIn. Review the bio of the successful candidate to determine if he or she has skills or experience you lack. This will give you clues about what similar positions in the industry will require, and you can work toward improving our CV in these areas.
